PALFINGER: Development partnership with Paul Group for hydrogen drives in commercial vehicles

27.10.2022

Paul Group and PALFINGER are launching a development partnership for hydrogen drives in commercial vehicles and present the PH2P® truck with an electrically operated PALFINGER hooklift at bauma 2022.

  • Paul Group integrates electrically operated PALFINGER hooklift into the PH2P® truck, a medium-weight hydrogen fuel cell truck with a total weight of 16 tons and a range of around 450 kilometers

  • PALFINGER underlines its position as a pioneer in the area of electrified crane & lifting solutions on alternatively powered carrier vehicles

As part of their development partnership, the Paul Group and PALFINGER present for the first time a pre-production PH2P® truck with hydrogen fuel cell technology featuring an integrated electrohydraulically operated PALFINGER hooklift. The hooklift is a PALFINGER TELESCOPIC T15A with a maximum lifting capacity of 15 tons that is universally deployable and has an increased tilting force thanks to its bi-point geometry. PALFINGER offers its customers integrated complete solutions and relies on the Paul Group's expertise when it comes to enabling battery-electric operation of the hooklift module on a powerful hydrogen fuel cell carrier vehicle. Integrating a PALFINGER lifting solution onto an alternatively powered vehicle is less challenging at the interface than mechanical integration, which, among other things, requires suitable positioning of hydrogen tanks and batteries

The company's activities are focused on sustainability: At the IAA 2022, PALFINGER has already presented electrified solutions and is now demonstrating the hooklift integration on the PH2P® truck at bauma 2022 in cooperation with the Paul Group. Andreas Klauser, CEO of PALFINGER, explains: “Being open to new technology is essential. Our goal is for our customers to be able to easily use all PALFINGER solutions and products on any vehicle — regardless of the drive system. The development partnership with Paul Group is an interesting opportunity to exchange ideas on the topic of alternative drives and to exploit potential synergies.”

PH2P® truck range around 450 kilometers

The PH2P® truck is the first series-ready, funding-eligible, medium-weight hydrogen fuel cell truck from Germany with a total weight of 16 tons and a range of around 450 kilometers. The first 25 vehicles from series production by the Paul Group will be delivered to customers by the end of 2022. Paul presented the vehicle at the IAA 2022: The top speed of the PH2P® truck is 85 kph, continuous output 120 kilowatts, peak output 300 kilowatts. It can be filled up within 10 to 15 minutes. In the area of new mobility, the Paul Group is active in the series production of vehicles they have developed themselves as well as in after sales service, maintenance and repair, digital services, training & certification. The prototype on display is part of Paul Group's new Paul Hydrogen Power product line.

The Next Mobility Consortium, which in addition to vehicle developer Paul Group includes fuel station operators MaierKorduletsch and Shell Germany, also provides the appropriate filling station infrastructure. It enables a regional, scalable value chain with the production of green hydrogen, electrolyzers, logistics and refueling capabilities. With Shell, transport logistics companies can use a flexible pay-per-use model and cost effectively integrate the system into their fleet without risk. In August 2022, MaierKorduletsch began building one of the largest H2 filling stations in Europe on Paul's premises in Passau.

Paul Group managing director Bernhard Wasner: “We have entered into a development partnership with PALFINGER where we share our experience in engineering and operating new technologies. We are pleased to present our PH2P® truck with the PALFINGER hooklift integration as a pre-production vehicle for the first time at bauma 2022. We are confident that we will continue this cooperation on climate-neutral drive systems together with PALFINGER with further innovative projects in the future.”

The PH2P® hydrogen truck with electrically operated hooklift is on display at bauma, open-air area North at the PALFINGER main stand FN.826.
